 The sun festival Abu Simbel at the magnificent Abu Simbel Temples is one of the most extraordinary astronomical events connected to ancient Egyptian architecture. This phenomenon occurs twice a year when the rising sun travels through the temple’s long corridor and reaches the inner sanctuary, illuminating the statues placed deep inside the temple.

The Great Temple of Abu Simbel was built during the reign of Ramesses II in the 13th century BCE. It was carved directly into the mountainside to honor the king and the gods he worshiped. Inside the sanctuary sit four statues representing Ra-Horakhty, Amun-Ra, the deified Ramesses II himself, and Ptah. During the alignment, sunlight illuminates the statues of Ra-Horakhty, Amun-Ra, and Ramesses II, while the statue of Ptah remains in darkness because he is associated with the underworld.

This solar alignment takes place around February 22 and October 22 every year. Many historians believe these dates were intentionally chosen to mark important events in the life of Ramesses II, possibly his birthday or coronation day. The precise design of the temple shows the remarkable knowledge the ancient Egyptians had of astronomy and solar movement.

Today, thousands of tourists travel to Abu Simbel to witness this rare event. People gather before sunrise to watch the moment when the sun’s rays slowly illuminate the statues inside the temple.
