 The sun alignment on the face of Ramesses II is a remarkable phenomenon that occurs at the famous Abu Simbel Temples in southern Egypt. This event highlights the impressive engineering skills and astronomical knowledge possessed by the ancient Egyptians more than three thousand years ago.

The temple was commissioned by Ramesses II as a symbol of his power and devotion to the gods. Its massive façade features four colossal statues of the king seated on a throne, each standing about twenty meters tall. However, the most fascinating feature lies inside the temple. At the end of a long corridor is the sanctuary where four statues sit side by side.

Twice a year, the rising sun aligns perfectly with the temple entrance and shines deep into the sanctuary. The sunlight lights up the statues of Ra-Horakhty, Amun-Ra, and Ramesses II, while the statue of Ptah remains in shadow. This deliberate design reflects the religious symbolism of ancient Egyptian beliefs, as Ptah was considered a god of darkness and creation.

The solar alignment has continued even after the temple was relocated in the 1960s during the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Engineers carefully preserved the orientation of the temple so that the phenomenon could still occur each year.

Today, the event is celebrated with festivals and attracts visitors, photographers, and historians from around the world. It remains one of the most impressive examples of how ancient Egyptian architecture combined science, religion, and art into a single masterpiece.
